A Lesson In Tyranny
Sadly, the vast majority of Americans are, in fact, closet socialists and totalitarians--and they don't even know it. We've become so stupid as to no longer recognize stupidity. The basis of freedom (defined, in the government arena, as freedom from government) is individual liberty. Socialism is the polar opposite, placing the group before the individual, as if the group weren't made of individuals and as if the group were an entity in and of itself. Socialism is in direct opposition to Biblical principles, violating Natural Law. (Listen up, Christians: that means your socialist values are in defiance to God's values!)
One of the hallmarks of socialist thinking is in the numbers. For example, "3,000 lives can be saved every year if we legislate helmet use for motorcycle riders." (I made that number up for illustrative purposes.) In this example, the numbers are being used to justify the immoral theft of individual liberty. The false logic here is that saving those lives (against their will) somehow improves the health of the non-entity called society. Society is not a thing in and of itself; it is an abstract, unreal aggregate of real individuals. Socialism denies freedom to real people in order to grab power for an unreal thing called society.
Digging a bit deeper, we find that while this power-grab does indeed rob real people of God-given freedoms, it does not give the power to an unreal, abstract thing called society. That's the second ruse (the first being the proposition that a group of individuals has an identity independent of the individuals). In truth, the power is given to a special few individuals, those in government. The sinful lust for power seemingly inherent in everyone makes this a very attractive prospect..."as long as I am the one in charge," they secretly say. Conservative or liberal, most voters will choose to steal individual freedom if there's a chance they may be the beneficiaries of the power-grab.
As a lot, Christians are just as guilty as the damned, just as socialist. Their ungodly justification is that they will wield that power justly, but they fail to recognize that stealing freedom is itself a sin. Drunkenness may indeed be sinful (and it is), but removing the voluntary choice to refrain from drunkenness is also a sin. If God Himself does not take away our free will--and therefore our option to choose sin--who are we, the very epitome of sin, to steal others' free will in the name of "righteousness"? Those so-called Christians who would ask government to steal individual freedom "for the good of society" are practicing sin just as surely as any habitual rapist.
Socialism is evil. The use of aggregate numbers as justification for growing government power is a hallmark of socialist thinking. Most American, self-identified Christians (even most born-again evangelists, I dare say) are closet socialists, being too [willfully?] ignorant to recognize their own sin of socialism. Restore individual liberty, freedom from government, that all may have a God-given opportunity to choose obedience to the Father of their own free will. Repent and return to the Word and will of God.
